Fuel To Fly is a no-frills airport café nestled just before security at Dunedin Airport, serving a mix of locals and travelers who need a quick, reliable bite or caffeine fix before their flight. Its setup leans toward straightforward efficiency rather than leisurely sipping, but there’s a clear effort from the staff to inject warmth and friendliness into the experience, which helps offset the usual airport café trade-offs.

Coffee is a strong point here. The baristas take pride in crafting solid flat whites and other espresso-based drinks, including soy options, which reflects a decent awareness of local tastes. The environment is tidy and uncomplicated, making it easy to pop in for a decent coffee without fuss. Morning visits tend to be the busiest as travelers grab their caffeine kick before boarding.

The food menu leans on classic breakfast items, with standouts like the bacon and egg pie and scrambled eggs topped with hollandaise sauce. While some ingredients such as avocado and halloumi may not always be available, the kitchen offers comfort-style items including ham and cheese omelettes and a variety of fresh sandwiches and croissants that suit straightforward, casual dining. The chocolate ice shake is a notable sweeter option that fits well for families or those wanting something cold and indulgent before their flight.

Staff interactions are repeatedly mentioned as a highlight; people appreciate how the team—both front of house and kitchen—appear genuinely engaged and friendly, making a difference in what can otherwise be a rushed, impersonal setting. Sampling wine on the way out suggests the café occasionally offers extras beyond the usual grab-and-go options, adding a slightly more personal touch.

Patrons looking for a place to pause near Dunedin Airport will find Fuel To Fly satisfies the basics with a clean, welcoming atmosphere. It’s best suited to travelers and airport staff who want a quick, hearty breakfast or a well-made coffee without the frills. Because menu items can be limited and menus change, it’s a good spot to come with flexible expectations, especially outside peak meal times.

Fantastic coffees including soy flat white from the Barista sporting dreadlocks, great service, really friendly and on the way back out they even let us try the wine before buying. Lovely smiley staff. Remember, this is an airport so nothings ever going to be perfect but these people were great. Thanks.

Great coffee. Good ham & cheese omelette, the hash cakes served with eggs Benedict had ice in the middle of them - maybe process gap in the kitchen. Cabinet contained a fine range of sandwiches and breakfast items including croissants

Fuel to Fly offers a decent experience if you temper your expectations for an airport café. Located before security, it’s important to note that their menu availability can be extremely limited. During our visit, key items such as avocado, halloumi, and chicken were unavailable, forcing us to ask, “What do you actually have?” While this initially set a low tone for the visit, we were pleasantly surprised by the generous portions and quality of the food they did offer. The scrambled eggs on toast and the burger were both sizable and surprisingly delicious, far exceeding our adjusted expectations. The coffee was satisfactory, meeting the standard for New Zealand, though not remarkable. Another positive was the comfortable seating, which provided a pleasant spot to relax while waiting. Overall, while the extensive menu might mislead you into thinking there are abundant options, be prepared for a pared-down selection. If you stick with what’s available, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised by the quality. Fuel to Fly may not deliver on its full menu, but for an airport café, it offers a satisfying meal and a comfortable space to unwind before your flight.

Don’t usually review run of the mill service transactions but was so impressed with the service at Fuel To Fly that I just had to do it. Both the young guy at the counter that served us, and the chef that delivered our meals were professional, courteous and friendly. More than that, they cared, and took obvious pride in their work. Such refreshing interactions from staff in what I have noted is an increasingly jaded industry. A credit to the industry and the airport. The meals were tasty, and the coffee hot and flavourful. Great start to the day!

Perfect coffees, very clean set up and super friendly team. Perhaps one of the best cheese rolls in Dunedin. Thanks team, you rock
